Easter Message – 2004

In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, why do you look for the living among the dead? His is not here, he has risen! (Luke 24.5-6b)

The message of Easter is the message of Hope.  We are sending greetings in this spirit of Hope to the President of Uganda H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Government of Uganda and all the people of God in Uganda.

Anybody who is observing the events in the world may find that there is little or no hope at all.  The violence in our world is more frightening than encouraging: terrorism, caused by suicide bombers, wars in various parts of the world – Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Congo – just to name a few!  On our own doorsteps, you have the violence caused by LRA’s perpetual struggles which is causing daily death in the North and Northeast.  The sheer human suffering caused by these violence – in homeless conditions for people living in camps, lack of food and freedom to live a normal life.  Yet amidst all these, Easter brings to us Hope.

There is hope for us as a nation because the Christ, who was born, walked our world and died as a sacrifice, is ALIVE.  He is in control of our world.  The human events are not spinning out of control.

It is in this great understanding that I call upon the people of Uganda to treat each other with dignity.  I call upon LRA to pursue the path of peace rather than violence.  How much longer will we continue to see the blood of Ugandans flowing?  I call upon the government of Uganda to also do all that can be done to pursue peaceful means to end this gruesome war.  Jesus suffered violence so that humanity should live in peace and for each other.  Jesus rose from the dead so that humanity should have hope for the future because he holds the future in his hands.

As we celebrate this Easter, I want to congratulate the President of the Republic of Uganda on his ascent to the highest rank of a General on April 6.  Your contribution to the nation of Uganda will go down in the history of Uganda.

May we also take out violence from our roads through careful driving and give every user of the road a right to travel safely.

I wish you all a joyful Easter full of Hope that He is risen and He is Alive never more to die.  Happy Easter!

The Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi
