A Word from the Archbishop
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
As the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, I extend a warm welcome to you and invite you to explore our website.
The Church of Uganda traces its beginnings to 1877 and has been preaching, teaching, and healing in Jesus’ name ever since then.
Through weekly worship services in more than 25,000 local churches in every community in Uganda, to youth camps in 39 Dioceses, from thousands of school chaplaincies to Diocesan conventions, from Mother’s and Father’s Unions to radio and television programmes, the Church of Uganda provides many opportunities to hear the Gospel and become a fully devoted disciple of Jesus Christ.
Half of Uganda’s educational and health care institutions are faith-based and they set the pace for institutions developed later by the government.
From early childhood development schools to PhD courses, the Church of Uganda is committed to educating the whole person so they can “love the Lord their God with all their mind.”
From village-level dispensaries to referral hospitals to a School of Medicine, the Church of Uganda advocates for access to health care for all people.
In 2021, the Church of Uganda celebrated 60 years of Self-Governance. You can watch a documentary film about our 60 years of self-governance at this link.
With almost 150 years of Self-Propagation through evangelism and discipleship and 60 years of Self-Governance, we are dedicating our next 60 years to becoming fully Self-Sustaining. From diocesan coffee farms to the Janani Luwum Church House in Kampala, from diocesan-run SACCOs to smaller commercial buildings in towns, from guest houses to KIDO – the Church of Uganda is laying a firm foundation for its mission sustainability.
Through strong partnerships with well-wishers, NGOs, and the government of Uganda, the Church of Uganda is accelerating the transformation of households and communities through development.
Today’s Church of Uganda is built on this strong foundation of following in the footsteps of Jesus, whose ministry proclaimed the Kingdom of God through preaching, teaching, and healing (Matthew 4:23).
As a member of the Anglican Communion, we are proudly a member of Gafcon and the Global South Fellowship of Anglicans.
Please reach out to your local parish priest, Bishop, or to the Provincial Office to explore partnership opportunities in fulfilling Jesus’ Great Commission.
Yours, in Christ,
The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugala
