Church of Uganda – Department of Health Service was established by the Provincial Assembly in 2005. The Health department transcended into a directorate in 2016 when the Master strategic plan 2025 was established. Health care and Health programs have been a priority area for Church of Uganda for over 100 years now. Health and Education were part and parcel of the ministry of the Church at its foundation. Church of Uganda (COU) currently has 248 Health Facilities (16 hospitals, 7 HCV, 111 HCIII and 114 HCII) 

The Directorate is mandated to coordinate the health service work of the Province of the Church of Uganda. It is meant to oversee the functions of the above health facilities (including Sir Albert Cook Hospital, Mengo, the first ever hospital in Uganda as well as 33 community based HIV/AIDS and health initiatives operating within the 39 Dioceses. 

Further still the Directorate was established to offer policy guidelines, overall leadership and coordination of all health related programs within the Province of the Church of Uganda at various levels (facility based and Community). The mandate of the Directorate is developed within the National Health Development context and framework of contemporary Uganda with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG) on Health. The Directorate of Health Services is headed by a DIRECTOR with Medical or Public Health Qualifications. Currently the Directorates have the following running Programs: 

Gender and Reproductive Health which has the following components: Maternal Health, HIV Prevention, Sexual Reproductive Health, responding to unmet need for family planning and Gender Based Violence.
