The DNU is a faith-based organization that belongs to the global Anglican Communion. The Church began in March 1903 when the first missionaries from the Church Missionary Society entered Acholi land. They knelt down and prayer at Agung after crossing River Nile from Bunyoro. Agung currently is in Nwoya District and every year on 11 August and annual celebration takes place on this spot.  The first mission base was established at Keyo (1904 – 08) on 26 November the Diocese commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Acholiland. Diocesan status was granted in 1961 when the DNU was carved from the Diocese of the Upper Nile. The DNU is located within the districts of Gulu, Nwoya, Amuru and Omoro in Northern Uganda. It covers an area of 11,734 km2. It is bordered on the north by South Sudan. The area has a tropical climate characterized by two rainy seasons and consists of vegetation largely composed of savanna grassland. The Diocese is divided into 9 Archdeaconries. Each Archdeaconry has between 2 and 4 parish churches and each parish church has between 2-14 sub-parish churches. Altogether there are 41 parishes, in addition to 300 sub-parish churches. The average size of a parish church is at least 250 members. Sub-parish churches are located in smaller villages and have an average of 50 members.
